What Is Sciatic Nerve Pain?

Sciatic nerve pain is commonly known as sciatica. It’s a kind of pain that is caused by irritation to the sciatic nerve. Normally, the pain starts on the lumbar or lower back area and then it spreads through the thigh till it reaches the knee. The main reason for this is that the sciatic nerve starts from the lower spine area (lumbar area) and goes all the way down the buttocks through the calves and down to the foot. In fact, the sciatic nerve is the largest in the body. Sciatic nerve pain is marked by pain that can radiate to the hips. The pain can make walking very difficult and often impossible. Apart from pain, sciatica is characterized by other symptoms. A person with the problem can feel numbness, tingling or burning feeling in the lumbar area, upper part of the buttocks, thighs, or at the back of the legs.
